Amethi, Aug 22 (PTI) Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi wants to propagate the concept of micro-financing and self-help groups across the country hoping it wins the Nobel Prize like Grameen Bank founder Mohd Yunus of Bangladesh.
"A sapling was planted which has grown into a tree in Amethi. Now, I want to create a jungle and spread it all over Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere in the country," Gandhi said today.
The Amethi MP was speaking to over one thousand women of his constituency and members of a self-help group who have benefitted from the micro-financing model.
Gandhi also hoped that the concept started in Amethi gets due recognition and wins the Nobel prize as was the case with Grameen Bank founder Mohd Yunus of Bangladesh.
"I had gone to Bangladesh recently. It is a huge success and here the workers are now saying that we can win the Nobel prize for our efforts in these directions," he said.
Rahul asked the 1,000 odd women who had travelled from all parts of the constituency "do you know Bangladesh?" Some of the women raised their hands.
"It is a poor country....Much poorer than India... in fact poorer than our poorest state....But the women have been empowered and they are taking their own decision." he said.
Urging the women to fight for victory over poverty, he said they should come out of their houses and ensure the success of the micro-financing scheme.
Gandhi said "we hear people in Delhi and elsewhere talking about India marching ahead but one part of India is moving ahead and the other part remains where it is."
Rahul said if India had to move forward poverty had to be vanished first. "You all have worked hard on this scheme (micro financing). I hope you all would move forward and remove the slur of poverty from Amethi," he said.
The MP, who is on a three-day visit to his constituency, said such a scheme has succeed in states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
He said that in Uttar Pradesh "our sisters do not move out and prefer their confines of the home".
The concept in Amethi comprises of small self-help groups of 10-20 people who deposit a particular amount in bank every month and one of the participants takes out the money from bank and uses it for small scale entrepreneurship.
After succeeding in their entrepreneurship they deposit the money which they had taken as lone to the bank. The self help group is the guarantor of the loan.
The scheme conceptualised in the 1990s has now involved more than 20,000 women in Amethi.
